Solar power that is generated by your solar panels is most often used in what is referred to as a “grid-linked” system. This means that the home is still connected to the mains power supplier, known as the local “grid” hence the term grid linked. The power generated by the homes solar system is used in the home at the time of generation and any surplus is fed back into the grid through the homes power meter. Power companies will generally credit a home owners account for this power that is “exported” to the grid. When the sun is not shining the home uses power from the grid as usual, the power generated during sunlight hours offsets the total power used saving you money.

An “Off grid” system is a solar power system, using solar panels to generate power that is then stored in a bank of batteries and used in the home as required. The benefits of a “Off grid” system are mainly involved in situations where a home is either in an area with no power grid such as on an island or out in the country. In these situations an installation of solar panels linked to a bank of batteries and a generator and other associated equipment can generate enough solar power to run a home without being connected to a power company. “Off grid” systems are a lot more expensive to install and maintain than a “Grid linked” system so most home owners opt for the Grid linked solar power system.
