SolarKing – Opening the door to solar and storage

Conferences.

If you are like me, you love them and loathe them all at the same time.

Days inevitably turn into eighteen hour marathons featuring prodigious handshaking, trying to remember thousands of names, walking miles in expo halls and just for fun, learning a thing or two.

Personally, it’s the networking and fascinating conversations that are the highlight for me because I love hearing about the experiences of solar suppliers, installers and retailers. It’s my reality check on what my own data tells me and there’s no better opportunity than when 4000 solar industry folks get together in a single event.

Mirroring the industry, several solar conferences have consolidated this year (which is a relief ‘cos it was getting crazy for a while there) and Solar 2015 is no exception.

The Australian Solar Council’s annual event includes three streams this year; all co-located in Jeff’s Shed in Melbourne from the 13th to 14th of May 2015, a mere 4 weeks away!. Walk in through the front door, choose your favourite stream and geek it up.

The trade show is going to be fascinating this year with a mix of solar and storage products on show from all the usual culprits and I’m just guessing that there could be a few new things on show too. It’s all located in a single area, so wear your comfy shoes, take a notepad and get around. The event organisers also tell me that this year all the conference sessions will be in the main exhibition hall which makes it simple to duck in and out of sessions in between checking the exhibits.

The first stream run the Australian Solar Council, will focus on industry and policy topics featuring some political heavy weights – a prime opportunity for policy announcements and big statements if past years are anything to go by.

These sessions are always great if you want to get a sense of where we could be headed from a regulatory and policy perspective and like you I’m sure, I’ll be waiting with baited breath to hear the latest on the RET.

The second stream is dedicated to energy storage and the inaugural event for the ASC’s new sister body, the Energy Storage Council. This stream features a host of experts looking at integration, policy, technology and the experiences of other countries. This new entity is really important as storage starts to ramp up and we are proud to be a founding member.

Day one features amongst other things an afternoon panel session on optimising energy storage where, as the panel chair, I’ll try to keep everyone honest and delivering interesting stories. Day two features some very cool sounding case studies about the integration of storage in Australia and abroad.

The third stream is the professional development stream run by the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Focused on the practical issues facing businesses it is a great blend of training, facts, data and how standards and regulations apply. They even let me slip in a talk on how I reckon electric vehicles will increasingly be integrated into the grid but most importantly what we have learned and how you can apply it to your business.

Some of the Energy Storage program highlights include:

• Energy Storage Market Trends – US & Global presented by international speaker Dr Ali Nourai, Energy Storage Segment Director, DNV GL
• Optimising battery storage for the new energy economy panel session led by Raghu Belur, Co-founder, Enphase Energy
• The future of the Australian Energy Market and the adoption of storage technologies session
• Effectively Evaluating the Cost of Storage
• Regulatory and contractual arrangements for energy storage in Australia, with lessons from overseas markets
• Remote and Off Grid Energy Storage session
• Industry Best Practice

The trade hall exhibition is free so that makes it a no brainer and the three concurrent streams are very affordable and also free to attend allowing you to tailor what you want to see and hear. Of course, the biggest challenge with so much to see and do is how to choose but I’ve got you covered here; when I was trying to work out where I had to be and decide what I wanted to see I got some help from the conference team and we whipped up a three stream multi-mega program for you.

One door. Three shows. One huge expo. No cost. What’s not to like?

See you there!
